Day 1On our first day we had an excellent tour of the city of Vienna, where we learned about the culture and history of the city. Our tour included visits to the Hofburg Palace, Museums Quartier and St. Stephen's Cathedral. In the evening, our hosts cooked us traditional Austrian meals including schnitzel and eräpfelsalat (Austrian potato salad). We had a very enjoyable time trying new dishes and catching up with our hosts. Day 2 and 3On Saturday we visited the Zotter Chocolate Factory and tasted many of their yummy samples, followed by a wanter around their petting farm. They had local animals like Old Styrian chickens, as well as some more exotic species including ostriches! We then travelled to the hometown of one of our hosts where we got the opportunity to trek with llamas and relaxed with a BBQ. On Sunday, with temperatures soaring over 30°C, we hired a pedal boat on the Old Danube and enjoyed the morning sunshine. In the afternoon, we toured an ancient cave network where we learned about its history, experienced total darkness, and saw the skeleton of a bear that had become lost in the caves thousands of years ago. We finished the weekend off with a delicious meal in a traditional Austrian tavern. Day 4We had an educational day today, starting with a tour of the vet school and its associated clinics. These included the equine reproduction clinic and the large animal clinic, where we saw inpatients and discussed their cases with the clinicians. We then took part in an ultrasound tutorial, which was an invaluable opportunity to revise our knowledge and practice our skills. In the evening, we relaxed with a movie night and a picnic dinner! Day 5We had a wonderful time visiting the beautiful and historic Schonbrunn Palace on the outskirts of the city. We then travelled to the Naschmarkt, a market that dates back to the 16th century, for lunch. In the evening, we met up and ate traditional wiener schnitzel before playing "Welcome to my Mind", an entertaining game unique to IVSWA Austria. Day 6On our final day in Vienna, we visited on of the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna's research centres where we learned about the projects carried out there. We then spent an informative afternoon in the Natural History Museum, before having a final farewell dinner.
It was sad to see the end of this exchange. We had a wonderful time in Vienna and would like to thank IVSA Austria for hosting us and organizing brilliant activities!
